World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and four-time major-winner Rory McIlroy are locked in a thrilling battle to win the $A26.1 million top prize at the Tour Championship.

After 16 holes, McIlroy had incredibly claimed a one-shot lead over Scheffler after draining a stunning 32-foot birdie putt at the 15th before scrambling for par at the 16th.

Scheffler had led for all 70 holes of the tournament until trading places with McIlroy — who started the final round in second, but six shots back — with two holes to go.

After opening his final round with a bogey, McIlroy peeled off four birdies on the front nine to pull himself into the battle.

Scheffler, meanwhile, made three bogies on the front nine and another at the 16th to fall out of the lead. After 16 holes, he had made just one birdie for the round compared to McIlroy’s six.

Meanwhile, neither Cameron Smith or Adam Scott got their challenges going. Smith finished in 20th and Scott in 25th.
