One of the best rookies this season was Cats defender De Koning, who played all but two games and was credited with strengthening Geelong’s defence.

One of the more intriguing match-ups of the season came when Geelong faced Carlton in Round 3, which saw Sam take on Carlton ruckman and brother Tom.

The Cats won by 13 points and the mum of the two youngsters was asked what it was like watching her sons go head to head.

“We were lucky, we were drunk in a bar in Bali so it was OK,” Jacqui De Koning jokingly told Fox Footy’s Kath Loughnan.

“Every time Geelong got a goal, we went ‘Yay!’ and every time Carlton got a goal we went ‘Yay!’. It was great.

“There was a whole table of Geelong supporters at the end that shouted drinks for us and they won, so we were happy.”

Sam and Tom are two of 10 De Koning kids, and their mum said she is their biggest fan.

“I just think they’re amazing all the time,” she said.

“They lose and I go, ‘Great game!’ and they go, ‘Mum, I was crap, like what are you talking about.

“But no, you kicked that way and you were amazing. I’m the solid supporter.”

AFL fans couldn’t get enough of Mrs De Koning’s hilarious cameo appearance.

Their dad Terry De Koning, who played 31 games for Footscray, said: “It’s easier to play than watch your kids play.”

Bragging rights will be on the line once against for the De Koning brothers when the Cats face the Magpies in the Qualifying Final at the MCG next Saturday.

De Koning finished second in the Rising Star Award behind Collingwood’s Nick Daicos, who was the red-hot favourite to take it out.

In other AFL Players’ Association awards, Fremantle’s Andrew Brayshaw won the Leigh Matthews Trophy for the league’s MVP.

Touk Miller and Clayton Oliver were announced as joint winners of the Coaches’ Association player of the year on 98 votes.

Hawthorn’s Jai Newcombe was named the AFL Coaches Association’s Best Young Player.

Richmond’s Liam Baker won the Robert Rose Most Courageous Award, while Collingwood skipper Scott Pendlebury was named Best Captain for the second time.
