Richmond star Jack Riewoldt says Brisbane Lions captain Dayne Zorko went “way too far” with his sledge of Melbourne’s Harrison Petty.

The Lions insist they have put the situation “to bed” and will not hand down a formal punishment to Zorko, who’s words left Petty distressed and in tears during last week Friday’s match.

Riewoldt, appearing on AFL 360, said Zorko had crossed a line.

“(Zorko went) way too far,” he said.

“The hard thing is there’s so many people affected by what he sledged someone about. That sort of frustrates me more than anything else.

“Clearly if he had his time again he wouldn’t do it and he said he’s remorseful and apologised, but it’s a pretty poor thing to say.”

Riewoldt said there was a “code of conduct” among players and that Zorko had crossed the line with his comments.

AFL 360 co-host Mark Robinson asked the three-time premiership Tiger whether he would use the fallout as a way to rattle Zorko and the Lions when the sides meet in an elimination final next week.

“Do you stoop to that level and continue that trend on or do you park the bus and move on? I’m probably more of the park the bus and move on,” he said.

Fellow pannelist and Geelong spearhead Tom Hawkins agreed the issue should be left alone in respect of Petty’s wishes.

“Out of respect to Harrison and his family … we certainly park that and move on,” he said.

“When we talk about other people’s family that’s really delicate. That’s where he overstepped the mark just a touch.

“I agree there’s room in our game for sledging but there’s certainly a line and Dayne admittedly probably crossed that.”
