Dayne Beams has labelled former teammate Dayne Zorko’s retention of the Brisbane Lions captaincy “embarrassing” in the aftermath of a sledge of Melbourne player Harrison Petty.

Zorko addressed his comments in a radio interview on Wednesday, saying that while he was “remorseful” for his actions but also insisting the incident “wasn’t unprovoked”, with comments towards him “potentially” crossing the line.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Zorko said that, when approached by a distressed Petty at three-quarter time, he wasn’t initially sure what had prompted Petty’s emotions.

In an Instagram post, Beams, who played 58 games for the Lions between 2015 and 2018 and who was succeeded by Zorko as captain, took aim at Zorko’s comments.

“Really? You wondered what you said?” he wrote.

“Embarrassing that he is still captain. Worst thing is I’m not even surprised.”

Zorko said that while he was “remorseful” for his actions, the incident “wasn’t unprovoked”, with comments towards him “potentially” crossing the line.

AFL journalist Caroline Wilson says Brisbane Lions captain Dayne Zorko was subjected to “pretty disgusting” sledges in the build-up to his comment that left Melbourne player Harrison Petty distressed during last week’s clash.

Zorko addressed his comments in a radio interview on Wednesday, saying that while he was “remorseful” for his actions but also insisting the incident “wasn’t unprovoked”, with comments towards him “potentially” crossing the line.

Wilson, appearing on Channel 9’s Footy Classified, attempted to offer more insight into what Zorko had referred to.

“I’m told that some of the stuff said to Zorko … was pretty disgusting,” she said.

“If you were going to investigate what was said, you’d be more investigating what was said to Zorko about women in his life (that was) far worse than what was said to Petty.”

Wilson’s comments were echoed earlier by AFL 360 co-host Mark Robinson, who said Zorko had “handled himself with class”given the circumstances.

“You’ve got to understand, everyone, that he was responding to some verbal jibes from the Melbourne Football Club,” he said.

“Now I’m not going to repeat them here either … about his personal life, about his family. About his wife.

“So he responds as he did. Dayne Zorko could’ve easily said today, this is what was said to me, but he didn’t. He took it on the chin, he said hey, I was responding, but I admit that I went over the line.

“I think that was a pretty good response. It’s a very ugly episode, I think now certainly for Zorko, there’s a little bit of understanding there was a bit coming the other way from the Demons.”

Former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon added on Footy Classified: “He (Zorko) looked agitated (during the game) and now I begin to understand the nuances and why.”

“He was provoked, it was of a deeply personal nature and maybe he actually controlled himself reasonably well in context.”
