Spinner Adam Zampa has added some spice to Tuesday’s Melbourne derby at the MCG, by attempting to run out Tom Rogers with a brutal ‘mankad’.
With Mackenzie Harvey on strike and trying to lift the Renegades’ total, Rogers was backing up too far with two balls remaining when Zampa took the opportunity to run his rival out.
Rogers was left stunned and frustrated by the moment, and could be heard arguing with the Stars’ spinner through the stump mic.

But Zampa was adamant Rogers should have been out, and opted to appeal for the wicket.
Replays for the third umpire showed Zampa’s arm had gone past the vertical to satisfy the law for a run out at the bowler’s end, and Rogers was allowed to remain.
Boos could be heard ringing out at the MCG while fans looked confused in the stands.
“I don’t like that rule. I don’t like the mankad rule whatsoever,” Fox Cricket’s Brett Lee said.
“The best way to do it is to say to the batsman, ‘if you leave your crease, you get docked five runs’. Take it away from the bowler.
“I just don’t like seeing that in the game of cricket.”
Renegades teammate Sam Harper said Rogers stormed back to the dugout after the clash with Zampa.
“I missed it, I was padding up and he came in fuming!” he revealed.
Commentator Brad Haddin was adamant Zampa’s actions were out of frustration but said it was clear there was “no love lost” in the Melbourne derby.
The Renegades ended up limping to 7-141 after losing regular wickets throughout their 20 overs.
Without captain Nic Maddinson – who suffered a serious knee injury in their last match against Perth – replacement opener Harper couldn’t get off the mark and fell for his third duck in five BBL starts this summer.
After being sent in to bat, Martin Guptill faced every ball of the opening over and got the Renegades off to a great start.
Unfortunately for Harper, it took just one trap set by the Stars for the wicketkeeper to top edge one to fine leg, and fall for a golden duck.
“They had the field set exactly for that,” Fox Cricket’s Brad Haddin said.
“They went to attack Harper at the body. He wasn’t able to control that one. Smart move by the Stars.
“This was a plan to bowl at Sam Harper’s body.”
And it wasn’t the only plan that “paid dividends” for the Stars, after Hilton Cartwright revealed they planned to target Aaron Finch early before he could get set.
When Guptill was “left spewing” by his simple chip catch back to Beau Webster, Finch came to the crease and the Stars went on the attack, immediately bringing Trent Boult back into the attack.
And the plan worked, as Finch feathered one through to the keeper.
After a quick review, the Renegades skipper was sent on his way for just one.
“As soon as Finch came to the wicket, they wanted to make life uncomfortable,” Haddin praised.
“Now they’re 3-64.”
To add to the Renegades’ woes, veteran Shaun Marsh was spotted limping between wickets.
Coach David Sakker confirmed Marsh was struggling after a slip earlier in the innings.
“Shaun’s struggling a bit with his leg,” he told Fox Cricket.
“Clearly grimacing between overs. It’s a bit of a drama at the moment.
“I think he slipped next to the wicket, it’s not ideal but we’ll keep pushing.”
After struggling to run, and even throwing away his bat in a hilarious blooper, Marsh fell for 32 off 35.
He’s unlikely to field in the Stars’ innings.
The decision to send in Jono Wells when Marsh’s wicket fell wasn’t well received by both Haddin and commentator Brett Lee – who felt Will Sutherland was the better option.
“This is where they need someone in who can get them up to the 170 score,” Lee lamented.
“I just think they need a bit of energy with what they are trying to do,” Haddin added.
“When they won their first three games, this is where (Andre) Russell had come in.
“It puts a bit of fear in the competition if (Sutherland) does get going.”
